NEW PALTZ – Undocumented students, particularly those covered under
former President Obama’s DACA – Deferred Action Childhood
Arrivals – is a topic on college campuses around the nation since
President Trump’s immigration plans.
The SUNY Board has already reaffirmed its policy toward undocumented students, noted SUNY New Paltz President Dr. Donald Christian.
“They address many of the concerns that we hear from students and others who want campuses to declare themselves sanctuary campuses,” Christian said. “This is something that SUNY presidents are not are not given the authority to do, to declare a campus a sanctuary and given all the other safeguards in place, that would largely be a symbolic move and not a particularly substantive one.”
Trump’s efforts to block immigrants from entering the US from first seven, then six, primarily Muslim nations, have been temporarily blocked by the courts.
