Replacing this old bridge has been under consideration for several years
PORT JERVIS – Construction on a new bridge over the Neversink River in Port Jervis is expected to begin this summer.
The project will replace the existing structure with an at-grade overpass rather than a conventional bridge, said Mayor Kelly Decker.
“It will be a flat deck bridge so that it doesn’t inhibit any high loads,” Decker said. “The only problem is you have the trestle just further down so there is still going to be a high restriction, but it will be designed so that it will aesthetically pleasing.”
The cost of the new bridge is some $12 million with 80 percent coming
from the federal government, 15 percent from the state and five percent
local contribution. Decker said during the 18-month construction period, the current bridge
will be moved upstream with one lane open for alternating traffic.
