NEWBURGH – Four after a CSX freight train derailed when it struck a rail maintenance vehicle on tracks on the Newburgh-New Windsor line, the trains are running again.
They are moving slower as the track that has been replaced is temporary, said Acting Newburgh Fire Chief Terry Ahlers, who added it would be wise to provide federal assistance that can make rail travel safer,
“We as the public depend on a lot that the railroad does,” Ahlers said. “We all drive vehicles that are driven by the fuels they bring. We all furnish our houses and build our houses with the stuff… we eat the food that comes off these trains. The railroad is as important now as it always has been. To give them the assistance to make their crossing safer, I think is a great thing.”
The reduced speed will be the rule until permanent replacement track can be put down.
