NEWBURGH – A civil service test for permanent Newburgh city police chief is scheduled for Saturday, March 18 and six people have signed up to take it. None of them is a present member of the Newburgh police force.
Current Police Chief Daniel Cameron’s last day on the job is today. He has accepted a job in the private sector.
Minimum requirements to be eligible to take the test include a bachelor’s
degree in related curricula, four years of full-time experience as a police
officer, two years of which must be in a supervisory post as a second
line supervisor, or an associate’s college degree and six years
of full-time experience as an officer, two years of which must be as a
second line supervisor.
A second line officer is defined as two ranks above the rank of police officer.
Lt. Richard Carrion is the highest tenured lieutenant in Newburgh and he has only 19 months under his belt in that post. He has been with the police for force 22 ½ years.
A few months ago, the city council recreated the position of deputy chief. Carrion could be eligible to serve in that capacity.
In order for a person to be appointed from a civil service list, at least three people must have passed the exam. If the list has less than three names or all candidates who passed it turn down a job offer, whoever has been named interim officer-in-charge would remain in that capacity until another test has been scheduled.
