CARMEL – The cold drizzle that fell Tuesday morning set the somber mood as the Putnam County community said its farewells to Sheriff’s Senior Investigator Mark Gilmore, who died on March 1 while exercising at a gym in Dutchess County. He was 54.
Law enforcement officers from across the region, as well as Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Jersey came to Carmel to pay their respects to a man who Putnam Sheriff Donald Smith said was a “consummate professional who worked hard every day to keep dangerous drugs away from our children and young adults.”

Gilmore’s wife, Amy, and their daughter, Mattingly, were escorted from their home in Dutchess County to the chapel in a limousine by a police motorcade. As they exited the vehicle in Carmel, Mrs. Gilmore turned to her daughter and told her, “These people all loved your daddy.” The little girl smiled as she looked at the throngs of officers.
Gilmore was a member of the county’s Emergency Response Team and was a motorcycle officer who worked his way through the ranks at the sheriff’s office, first as a corrections officer.
