KINGSTON – Some three dozen Kingston area residents rallied at the Kingston office of State Senator George Amedore on Tuesday, urging him to “have a heart, raise the age.”
They were referring to legislation in Albany that would raise the legal age for a person to be charged with a crime as an adult to18.
Placing children ages 16 and 17 in adult prisons is “devastating,” said Citizen Action New York lead organizer Callie Jayne, who said Amedore was targeted for the rally because he is local.
“I live in Kingston,” Jayne said while outside Amedore’s office. “The people who came here are Kingston residents. He is our senator in this district so as constituents, we are out here.”
Citizen Action said teens 16 and 17 are 36 times more likely to commit suicide than those in juvenile detention facilities and they are 50 percent more likely to face an armed attack and twice as likely to face physical assault by staff than youth in juvenile facilities.
