STORMVILLE – An official of New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) is hopeful that the state prisons system will pursue criminal charges against three inmates who violently assaulted six corrections offices at Green Haven Correctional Facility on Tuesday, January 31. That would serve as “a deterrent for future attacks,” said Michael Mazzella, NYSCOPBA Mid-Hudson Regional vice president.
“This was an extremely violent and volatile situation for all of our officers involved,” Mazzella said. “What started out as a medication run to the clinic turned out to be very dangerous for all of our officers when the three inmates attacked and hurt six officers. We are very lucky that none of our officers, three of which were female, sustained serious injuries but it easily could have turned out that way, especially after we learned one inmate was armed with a makeshift weapon.”
That inmate had a 6 ½ inch long plexiglass shank in a cardboard sheath and hidden in his underwear.
