ALBANY – A total of 17 bridges and culverts would be rehabilitated and replaced across the Mid-Hudson Valley through Round One of the Bridge NY initiative in Governor Cuomo’s proposed fiscal year 2017 state budget.
The projects range from a high of over $2.8 million for Hillside Avenue over the Mamaroneck River in the Village of Mamaroneck to a low of $139,000 for Lake Road over Metro-North Railroad in the Town of New Windsor.
One project in particular, $950,000 would replace the bridge on Route 32 over the Quassaick Creek in the City of Newburgh. Traffic has been carried over the creek for the last several years by a temporary bridge. The city could not afford to cover the course of a rebuild on its own.
Mayor Judy Kennedy said the state funding would pay the bulk of the cost.  “It will cost us more than $900,000. I think the last estimate we had on replacing that bridge was $1.2 million, but that will move us in the right direction with it anyway,” the mayor said. “Hopefully this is approved by the [state] legislature.”
The additional money could be secured through a loan or other means, Kennedy said.  “We may be able to get another grant. That is a piece that we haven’t figured out yet because this was just newly announced.”
Projects were selected through a competitive process that evaluated the resiliency of each structure; current structural conditions; and the significance and importance of the bridge, including traffic volumes, detour considerations, number and types of businesses served; and impacts on commerce.
