Firefighter Chuck Flickinger takes his last ride past his beloved Lake Carmel Fire house

CARMEL – Chuck Flickinger was a 9/11 hero. He rushed down to Ground Zero to assist first responders when the Twin Towers fell. At 56, the Carmel man lost his fight with cancer on New Year’s Day from a disease he contracted by serving at the highly toxic site.
On this Saturday, as snow fell, more than 200 mourners attended a funeral service at Trinity Lutheran Church in the Town of Southeast.
Flickinger, a member of the Lake Carmel Fire Department, was eulogized as a family man, a dedicated member of the community and a humanitarian who aided the sick and indigent following natural disasters in North and Central America.
In addition to his community service, he was a registered nurse at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers.  He also served in the Marines from 1978 through 1982.
Following his funeral service, his casket, atop a Lake Carmel fire truck, was driven past the fire department headquarters for a final salute.
