Jiava takes the oath

TOWN OF WAPPINGER – In 2015, Lori Jiava ran in a three-way race for Wappinger town supervisor and came in second.  The winner, Greg Quinn, announced shortly after the 2015 election that he would not be able to serve.  The Town Board unanimously to appoint Jiava as supervisor in January 2016.
Due to the appointment, Jiava was required to run for the office again in November 2016.  The longtime Wappingers school board member ran and won. Jiava was administered her oath of office on January 2 at Wappinger Town Hall by Poughkeepsie City Judge Frank Mora.
In front of a capacity crowd including other local elected officials and dozens of community members, Jiava thanked her colleagues on the town board for their assistance in making a smooth transition.
“We worked very hard to bring the community together because it seemed that it was just a place where people lived and not really came together. I feel that the community itself feels that it is a hometown, not just a place to live,” she said.
Jiava cited her accomplishments including being awarded over $540,000 in grants for infrastructure repair and the creation of the Taxpayer Protection Plan, which commits funds in the next two years to prevent the town’s budget from exceeding the tax cap, as the foundation for the work that still needs to be done.    The planned work includes energy-efficient window replacement and working with the Village of Wappingers Falls and the Town of Poughkeepsie to address water and sewer issues that have been plaguing the town.
Jiava will have to run again this coming November for a full two-year term.
