NEWBURGH – In the wake of the recent tragic warehouse fire in Oakland, California and the Halloween party in gallery space in Newburgh in which two young women were shot to death, city officials are advising property owners and event hosts to consider the possible serious and sometimes fatal consequences of illegal occupancy.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said property owners should be particularly familiar with building code as it relates to meeting space.
“Some of the renewed push that we are going to have to ensure that anywhere there is assembly space there is adequate fire suppression and adequate means of ingress or egress in case of a fire emergency or smoke or other emergency,” he said.
Ciaravino and Acting Fire Chief Terry Ahlers urged all property owners
and event hosts to become familiar with the requirements of the code and
to reach out to the city codes department “well in advance of any
planned events to protect and provide for the safety of event attendees.”
