Royle: “People don’t want to travel … just for one thing.”

GOSHEN – Operators of tourism venues in Orange County had an opportunity
Monday to be briefed on the Legoland theme park proposed in the Town of
Goshen and how it would be one component in the greater tourism effort
of the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Orange County Tourism Director Susan Hawvermale put the briefing together.

Legoland Head of Community and Project Relations Phil Royle noted the
facility would be integrated into the larger tourism experience.

“People don’t want to travel all this way from Manhattan just
for one thing. They want to come and spend a weekend here. They want to
stay at different hotels. They want to visit the different towns and village
around here and talk about Legoland,” he said.
Hawvermale affirmed that Legoland would not be an island until itself.

“Legoland is not going to be a fortress destination; they are reaching
out to our other tourism sites to work with them and do an exchange to
have people go to historic sites and to our museums as well as other places,”
she said.
Royle said assuming the project receives the green light in January or
February, they would hope to start construction in March or April with
completion in 2019.
