KINGSTON – Starting with the premise there that is insufficient parking in Kingston’s shopping districts Mayor Steven Noble would like to start charging to park in the city’s nine lots and reinvest much of that income back into upgrading them.
Noble outlined the plans to the Kingston Business Alliance on Thursday where he said his concept was “well received.”
The mayor wants to charge 75-cents per hour to park in the lots.
“In the budget we have a revenue item of about $175,000 for all
of the lots and then we are going to take about $100,000 of that, which
is the first time that we have ever done this where we are actually putting
meter revenue into the lots themselves,” Noble said, contending
the new investment would make the lots look and work better,
For motorists who frequently use the lots, they would be able to purchase a monthly permit for $40.
Noble’s plan also calls for increasing on-street parking meters from 50 cents to $1 per hour. Motorists would still be able to feed the meters with quarters or possibly charge the cost on their smart phones.
He would like to implement the new plans early in 2017.
