Seventeen charged with stealing over $171,000 in public assistance benefits

GOSHEN – A total of 17 people have been charged with felonies including
welfare fraud and grand larceny for illegally obtaining over $171,000
in public assistance benefits administered through the Orange County Department
of Social Services and the State Department of Labor.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler and Sheriff Carl DuBois
announced the charges on Tuesday.

The total amount allegedly stolen from the Department of Social Services
amounted to $89,649. The total amount stolen by fraudulent unemployment
insurance benefits claims was $81468, all of which has been repaid by
those charged.

This was the sixth public benefits fraud enforcement action since Hoovler
took office. To date, 152 people have been charged with welfare fraud
with more than $1.6 million involved. So far, the county has been repaid
$460,614 by those charged.
