WHITE PLAINS – A Mount Vernon man was sentenced in Westchester County Court on Wednesday to 20 years in state prison after being found guilty by a jury of attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm, all as felonies.
Just after 4 p.m. inside 16 East 3rd Street in Mount Vernon, Juan Picart, 26, shot the victims six times with a .45 caliber handgun. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he required emergency surgery and survived the shooting.  The shooting occurred in broad daylight inside the Top Deli Market in front of other customers and was captured on store video surveillance.
Picart was eventually located after police tracked his cellphone to a friend’s house in Mount Vernon where he was staying. The gun was located inside a toilet tank and Picard’s DNA was matched to the clothing recovered from his sister’s house. Gunshot residue was also found on his clothing.
