BEDFORD – A Mount Vernon man is being held in the Westchester County
Jail on charges of attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated
assault on a police officer after an incident at a Mount Kisco car dealership.

The Westchester County police officer who interrupted a burglary at the
dealership escaped serious injury on Tuesday morning when he was attacked
by a knife-wielding suspect following a vehicle and foot pursuit.
The suspect was later identified as Clare Greenland of Mount Vernon.

Officer David Sanchez was conducting an inspection of the Arroway Chevrolet-Cadillac
dealership on North Bedford Road about 2:15 a.m. when he saw a suspicious
vehicle in the parking lot. He attempted to stop a Honda Odyssey minivan
as it left the property, but the driver reused to pull over.

Greenland jumped out of the vehicle and ran off.

Sanchez gave chase through backyards before catching up to him on Dickson
Lane in Bedford. That is when Greenland struggled, striking the officer
several times and trying to stab him before he was subdued and taken into
custody. A knife was recovered at the scene and punctures were discovered
on the officer’s bullet-resistant vest.

Greenland was also charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon,
criminal possession of stolen property, fleeing an officer in a motor
vehicle and resisting arrest.
