MONROE – The Monroe Police Department conducted an undercover operation targeting illegal taxis being operated in the Village of Monroe. Officers assigned to the patrol unit, along with a member of the detective unit, conducted the undercover operation on October 14.
The primary focus of the undercover operation was directed at individuals operating taxicabs without proper licenses, registrations and insurance.
Police said often times, due to the fact that these illegally operated taxicabs do not have the required state registrations, they are unsafe and can be dangerous not only to the occupants inside, but to other vehicle operators, passengers and pedestrians as well.
In New York, it is a crime to operate a for-hire vehicle without the vehicle being properly bonded with insurance. It is also illegal to operate a vehicle for hire without the proper driver’s license.
During the undercover operation, Monroe officers made six arrests, issued 26 summonses for a number of state vehicle and traffic law violations and impounded three vehicles.
