MIDDLETOWN – The City of Middletown’s computer network was breached earlier this year and Mayor Joseph DeStefano said Friday an investigation revealed no evidence of fraudulent misuse of any personal information.
The FBI, State Police, the State Office of Information Technology Services and a third party investigated the June 15 hack and DeStefano said Friday that an unauthorized individual or individuals gained access to databases in the Middletown system pertaining to anyone who had contact with the city police department.
“It’s a very serious situation. We are seeing it on the national level with the WikiLeaks data and I think people can really bring it home now that it is happening on a local level in a small community such as the City of Middletown,” DeStefano said. “We have handled it appropriately, our staff has handled it appropriately, very quickly we had a response.”
The hackers were able to export at least a portion of the information in the databases, the mayor said, but there was no evidence that the affected personal information was publically displayed or distributed, and the city is unaware of any actual fraudulent misuse of the personal data.
Information potentially accessible to the hackers includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, fingerprints, FBI numbers and addresses.
Anyone who feels they may have been victimized may call 855-205-6940.
The city is also offering one year of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services for anyone affected.
