NEWBURGH – Acting Newburgh Police Chief Daniel Cameron, now the acting deputy police chief, will have to take the civil service exam for deputy chief.
Cameron, whose permanent rank is lieutenant, was acting police chief over the last several months, but cannot serve in that position any longer because he did not take the chief’s exam last March.
The city council has created the position of deputy police chief and named Cameron to that position temporarily. He must take the civil service test for that when it is offered, presumably next spring.
It is hoped by city officials, though, that a new police chief exam will be given and Cameron will take it and come out on top. There is near-universal agreement that he is the best choice for chief. While acting chief, he received kudos for his interaction and relationship with both the department’s rank-and-file and the community.
