HIGHLAND FALLS – The Village of Highland Falls has proposed building a new wastewater treatment plant and sharing its capacity with the neighboring US Military Academy at West Point.
West Point’s facility is antiquated and Highland Falls proposes using the $70 million the military academy secured from Washington to be applied to a village facility, as proposed by West Point graduate and professional engineer John Dodson.
“Rebuild our plant, which is 20 feet out of the water, rather than the West Point plant, which was six feet under water in the Irene storm and where we are under the jurisdiction of the state DEC and when the DEC has a consent order against West Point, it just means a couple of reports instead of any fines where it has to get fixed out here,” he said. “We feel that this is a better place for it.”
Dodson said West Point would save $1 million a year by joining with the Village of Highland Falls.
