NEWBURGH – With a civil service decision that interim Newburgh Police Chief Daniel Cameron could no log serve in that position, the city council has created a new post of deputy police chief until the top job is sorted out.
Cameron was offered the deputy job and he has accepted it, Mayor Judy Kennedy said.
“As long as we can keep Dan that’s a blessing to the city,” Kennedy said. “Dan has done good things for the city and we need to figure out how to make that work.”
When the chief civil service test was administered last March, Cameron refused to take it because it was an open competitive test. As a long-time lieutenant, he wanted the city to give him a promotional test. He did take Orange County’s police chief exam and score the highest, but because the state ruled qualifications were different that the city’s, his high grade didn’t matter.
For the most part, city residents support Cameron and the work he has done since he became interim chief. For now, he will remain top dog until such time as a permanent chief is appointed, and city officials hope that will be him.
