WHITE PLAINS –A Westchester Veteran Treatment Tracks program has been created, Ninth Judicial District Administrative Judge Alan Scheinkman announced Thursday. The program will be in the Westchester County Court Judicial Diversion Part and city drug courts in Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Yonkers and White Plains.
They will be modeled after the drug court program, which combines rigorous
treatment, intensive judicial monitoring and coordinated services as well
as enhanced commitment among the various stakeholders.
The Yonkers City Drug Court Veteran Track is already operational with the others to be launched next month.
“Veterans have done so much to protect our country, especially those who have put themselves in harms’ way in service overseas,” said Scheinkman. “Some veterans have had difficulty transitioning from military service. When a veteran enters the criminal justice system, we should make every effort to help that veteran obtain treatment for conditions which may be impeding the veteran’s ability to succeed in re-entering civilian life.”
“The drug court model has proven to be a successful approach for offenders with mitigating circumstances,” said County Executive Robert Astorino. “Whether it’s treatment for addiction, depression or some other burden they bear after military service, our veterans deserve access to all the resources available to them.”
