Elderly driver charged with striking two pedestrians

WASHINGTONVILLE – An 83-year-old Washingtonville has been charged
with striking a couple as they walked across Route 94 in the area of 16
East Main Street in Washingtonville around noon on Monday.

The pedestrians, a 71-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, both of New
Windsor, suffered leg injuries and were treated by Blooming Grove and
New Windsor EMS. They were transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s
Newburgh campus with injuries that were not considered life threatening.

The operator of the vehicle, Howard Kaplowitz, 83, was followed and detained
by a passing motorist after leaving the scene of the accident.

Washingtonville Police charged Kaplowitz with leaving the scene of a personal
injury motor vehicle accident, a misdemeanor, and released pending a future
court appearance.
