The super-crane at work

TARRYTOWN – The final steel girder assembly for the westbound span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge has been installed. Over 100 similar girder assemblies, some weighing more than 700 tons, have been installed on the new approach spans.  They rest atop the new bridge’s concrete piers, and in turn support the new road deck.
This was the super-crane’s last girder lift of the year.
The new bridge’s westbound towers are reaching their ultimate height at 419 feet above the Hudson River. Tappan Zee Constructors is scheduled to complete all four westbound towers within the coming weeks.
Workers continue to install the new westbound span’s stay cable system. Those cables are comprised of several metal strands, tightly packed in a protective sheath.
