TOWN OF WAWAYANDA – Two men were killed and three other were injured when the pickup truck in which they were riding ran off Route 6 in Slate Hill early Sunday morning and struck a utility pole.
State Police identified the dead as the driver, Vincent Peluso of Middletown and a rear seat passenger, Jared Santillo of Monticello, both age 19. Both died at the scene of the 2:09 a.m. crash.
Two other occupants were treated for broken bones and released while a third was admitted to the hospital in serious condition with internal injuries.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicated the truck was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve in the road. Wet conditions were a contributing factor.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Slate Hill and Wawayanda fire departments and the state Department of Transportation.
The accident remains under investigation.
