SAUGERTIES – A man, who walked out into Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties resulting in him being struck by the side view mirror of a passing pickup truck, has been ticketed for failing to yield the right of way to a motor vehicle while crossing in other than a designated crosswalk.
Kenneth Wise, 56, of Wappingers Falls, fell to the ground when struck causing injury to his ankle and foot when he was struck by the vehicle’s tire. Wise was treated at the scene and transported to the Health Alliance Broadway Campus where he was treated and released from the emergency room.
The truck was driven by a 47-year-old Boiceville man.
Chief Joseph Sinagra said reminded pedestrians that when crossing a street on any portion other than a clearly defined and designated crosswalk, vehicle traffic has the right of way and pedestrians must yield to them. Motorists must yield to pedestrians who are in a clearly defined and designated crosswalk.
“We have had a significant reduction in pedestrian-vehicle accidents in the past four years by nearly 50 percent,” the chief said. “This latest incident only underscores the need for us to continue our aggressive efforts toward reducing these types of accidents which are clearly avoidable.”
