SAUGERTIES – An 83-year-old man drowned Tuesday afternoon when the boat he placed in the Esopus Creek in Saugerties started to drift and he walked out into the water to retrieve it.
Saugerties Police said Harold Bauser, of Saugerties and a friend had intended to go fishing around 1:20 p.m. when they placed their boat in the water from the boat ramp. When the craft started to drift, Bauser went into the water and according to a witness, that is when he went unconscious.
The victim was spotted face down about 400 feet off-shore in about 15 feet of water and a Good Samaritan went in to pull him back to shore. He began resuscitation efforts and was rushed to the Health Alliance Broadway Campus in Kingston where he was pronounced dead about an hour and a half later.
