WASHINGTON – The US Department of Justice has approved $152,031
in funding for the City of Newburgh to launch and expand its new security
camera network.

The money was initially part of a $460,000 grant to the city as part of
its Project Safe Neighborhoods program, but the $152,000 was pulled back
by the feds due to a bureaucratic mistake.

This announcement comes on the heels of the murder of 18-year-old Keyshan
Gayle, who was walking on a dark Newburgh street several weeks ago and
was fatally shot in the back. His mother, other family members and residents
of the city raised their voices after the homicide calling for Newburgh
to be lit up with more street lights and cameras.

Three other security cameras were already being prepped for installation
on utility poles and Newburgh is waiting for word on another federal grant
to buy a ShotSpotter system, which would pinpoint in real time, where
shots have been fired.

The announcement of this latest funding for security cameras was made
by Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney.
