MONROE – Police and firefighters conducted a massive water search in Monroe Sunday night after a driver fled the scene of a serious car crash on Lakes Road in the Town of Monroe.
State Police said an SUV rear-ended a car while both vehicles were northbound past Walton Lake.
Firefighters said a witness saw the SUV driver jump out of his vehicle and run toward the lake. One and possibly two people in the car were left seriously injured and rushed to an area hospital.
Police checked the missing driver’s house but did not find him there.
Fearing he jumped into the lake, State Police called the Monroe Fire Department to search the water with their fireboats. About 40 firefighters responded to the scene, many wearing life jackets.  Three boats were put into the water and a State Police helicopter hovered overhead.
Sunday’s search was called off two hours after the 8:30 p.m. incident.
