KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein announced his opposition to a proposal to create 10 commercial ship anchorages between Kingston and Yonkers on the Hudson River.
Hein’s concern goes beyond the environmental, economic and infrastructure issues.
“I don’t want to see the port of New York’s major parking problem being solved on the backs of Hudson Valley residents,” the county exec said on Wednesday. “I firmly believe that this is an overreach intentionally asking for 43 locations by industry groups so that in the end when they try to settle for three or four or five spaces, people will think in some way, shape or form they are being reasonable.”
Hein and Democratic congressional candidate Zephyr Teachout voiced their opposition to the anchorages. “The Hudson River is the engine of our economy and the core of our heritage,” said Teachout. “Generations of New Yorkers have worked to clean this river of pollutants and we cherish the recreational and tourism opportunities that stem from this precious resource.”
