BEACON – The Beacon City Fire Department is no different than any other that relies on volunteers. The numbers are down because of busy lifestyles and other factors.
Beacon Fire Chief Gary Van Voorhis said despite the hurdles, they are always looking for more volunteers.
“It’s harder to be a volunteer fireman now,” Van Voorhis said. “There are more requirements; in each area you have to take different tests and also it is a lot of time away from your family. Our middle age firefighters may have two jobs, or active with their children at home. It is a huge commitment to the community.”
There are approximately 30 active duty volunteer firefighters in Beacon
along with 13 paid career firefighters.
