EMS officials monitor situation at nursing home after A/C broke
down

MID-HUDSON – The thunderstorms that rolled through the area during
the last several days resulting in a severe thunderstorm watch being declared
by the National Weather Service, have apparently eased; however, the excessive
heat warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday.

The heat lightning generated by the extreme heat claimed at least one
life when five people sat or stood by a wooden bench under a tree at Mansion
Street Park in Poughkeepsie. Five were injured by lightning, three seriously.
One of those died.

All of the residents at Highland Rehabilitation on Highland Avenue in
Middletown had to be evacuated on Saturday when the air conditioning system
failed. Ambulances rolled in and out into the evening hours, bringing
residents to 11 different facilities. State and Orange County emergency
services personnel were on the scene to assist.
All weekend, municipalities and community organizations ran cooling stations
to provide some relief for those who did not have air conditioning or
fans in their homes.

Temperatures will be in the upper 80s Sunday with the index of 96. There
is a 60 percent chance of precipitation with gusty winds and heavy rain,
possibly a thunderstorm, late in the afternoon.

The weather may be slightly better on Monday with partly sunny skies and
a high near 87. There is a 20 percent of showers after 2 p.m.
