NEWBURGH – Police Chief Daniel Cameron refused to take the Newburgh city civil service test for permanent chief status because the only exam given was an open competitive one. He felt that since he has been a Newburgh cop for close to 20 years, serving most recently as a lieutenant, he should have been given the opportunity to take a promotional exam.
Four officers from around Orange County passed the city test, but all have declined the offer to be considered for the job.
While Cameron did not take the city test, the list of those who passed a similar county civil service test administered on the same day reveals that Cameron took that one scoring the highest out of six who passed with a rating of 92.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino wrote to the Newburgh Civil Service commissioners asking them to confirm that the county and city tests were the same and “nominate a police chief as permanent with no further exam if New York State and/or the county and city commissions approve the Orange County exam as equivalent.”
Ciaravino citing civil service regulations, saying, “If the tests administered by Orange County are determined to be identical to the test offered by Newburgh, I would like to canvass the top three scoring candidates from the Orange County test to determine their interest in the police chief position for the City of Newburgh.”
