ELLENVILLE – The woman killed by her daughter in an Ellenville apartment
on Saturday morning died of multiple stab wounds, Police Chief Phillip
Mattracion said Monday.

Sarra Gilbert, 27, of Ellenville, is in the Ulster County Jail without
bail following the murder of her mother, Mari Gilbert, 52, of Ellenville.

An autopsy Monday revealed the victim died of multiple stab wounds, Police
Chief Phillip Mattracion said. The knife used was recovered at the scene,
he said.

The alleged killer was located in the apartment by police. Her clothing
was covered in blood, the chief said.

Officers went to the apartment at 9 Warren Street at 1:45 p.m. when Mari
Gilbert’s other daughter, Sherre Gilbert, called to ask them to
make a welfare check. An officer, who looked in a window when no one responded
to a knock on the door, saw a body and made entry into the residence.

Mattracion said the incident was a tragedy. “It’s a small
town. I’ve been here for 30 years,” he said, acknowledging
he knew the family.

Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright said that Sarra Gilbert
had been indicted by a grand jury on May 12 for aggravated cruelty to
animals and endangering the welfare of a child for an incident that took
place on February 19 concerning the intentional drowning of a puppy. That
indictment remains open.

An attorney for the family said he would seek a psychological examination
of Sarra Gilbert, saying he does not believe she is fit to stand trial.

The Gilbert family has faced other tragedy. Another daughter of the victim,
Shannon, was found murdered on Long Island at a time when a number of
prostitutes were being killed a few years ago.

Gilbert’s arrest over the weekend follows two other domestic violence
murders this summer with murder charges lodged against Earl Edwards and
Karon Bowden, A fourth homicide stemmed from charges against Kayla Pagan,
regarding the death of a 10-month-old child.

Pagan ‘s case is pending the action of the grand jury.
