Crane collapse shut down TZ Bridge

NYACK – All seven lanes on the Tappan Zee Bridge are open following
a crane collapse that shut down the entire structure last Tuesday. One
lane was damaged to the point that it was closed off once the bridge was
reopened.

Crews worked around the clock to make that last lane viable for traffic
again.

The crane was being used to hold a pneumatic hammer that was hammer piles
into the Hudson River from its perch on the new bridge under construction
adjacent to the existing one. The cause of the boom collapse remains under
investigation.

After the noon-time crane failure, the bridge was closed to all traffic
until early evening.

Only a couple of people sustained minor injuries. Officials said at the
time it was a miracle that no one was seriously hurt when the crane boom
crashed across all seven lanes of the bridge.
