LIBERTY – In the last two weeks, the number of Pertussis (whopping cough) cases in Sullivan County has almost doubled. The Public Health Department reported Friday that on June 30, there were 10 confirmed cases of and one probable case. As of July 15, there were 19 confirmed cases and an additional 33 suspected cases with lab results pending.
All individuals and their close contacts have been or are currently being
treated. The County Public Health Department is working closely with health
care providers in the county to monitor and identify any additional suspected
cases to ensure timely treatment and to control the outbreak.
Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air by cough. It begins with cold symptoms and cough, which becomes much worse over one to two weeks.
If you or your child comes down with any symptoms including a cough, the county says you should talk to your health care provider right away. If diagnosed with Pertussis, health officials said it is very important to complete the antibiotic regimen before returning to work, school or community functions, to reduce the spread of the disease to others.
