CLARKSTOWN – We have all heard of the do not call registry, which is supposed to prevent unwanted solicitors from call us.  The Town of Clarkstown has taken that concept one step further with the creation of a “do not knock” law.
Residents may register by calling town hall and placing a sticker on or near their door alerting solicitors that their address is on the registry, said Town Supervisor George Hoehmann.
“Anyone who violates this can be brought up on civil charges and it can be up to a $2,500 fine,” Hoehmann said.  “It’s an amendment to our peddlers and hawkers solicitation law and already, in the first two days since we have passed the law, we have had several hundred folks contact the town to get registered.”
Solicitors are already required by town code to obtain a permit from
the town to solicit and will now be required to abide the current do not
knock registry.
