POUGHKEEPSIE – A Poughkeepsie man arrested early Monday in connection with a commercial burglary in Hyde Park has been linked to 14 other burglaries and attempted burglaries. The motivation for the burglaries appears to be drug-related and the businesses were apparently chosen at random, investigators said.
Since May 3, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and town police in Hyde Park, East Fishkill, Poughkeepsie and Fishkill have been investigating 12 burglaries and three attempted burglaries. They all involved gas station/convenience store break-ins in which cartons of cigarettes were stolen.
Through a multi-agency investigation, police identified Jason Reed, 33, of Poughkeepsie as a suspect.
Early Monday morning, the Shell gas station in Hyde Park was burglarized and a vehicle with Reed and two women was stopped close by. After investigation, all three were charged in connection with the burglary. Reed was charged by the sheriff’s office and the women were charged by Hyde Park Police. It was discovered that Reed was allegedly connected to the other burglaries.
Cartons of cigarettes stolen from the Shell station were recovered at the time of the traffic stop; however, the proceeds from the other burglaries were not recovered.
All three people were charged with felony burglary. Reed was placed in the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. The two women were released to appear in court at a later date. Their names were not released for investigatory reasons.
