MIDDLETOWN – Following a two-hour public hearing into suggested
ways to slow down motorists on Highland Avenue and other streets in the
City of Middletown, the common council will weigh the options.
Residents recommended everything from doing nothing to placing police patrols on the street regularly or installing stop signs.
Mayor Joseph DeStefano knows what he wants, raised crosswalks.
“They are not a speed bump; they are not a speed ramp,” DeStefano said.  “They are exactly what they are called – a speed bump. They are exactly what they are called – a raised crosswalk at some intersections. They are decorative. They are placed in concrete with decorative stamping on top. They are pedestrian friendly. They are used to protect pedestrians and slow down vehicles.”
Highland Avenue is not the only street with speeding problems. Whatever decision prevails, that will be up to the common council, not the mayor.
