HIGHLAND – The cause of
the blaze that destroyed a bunk house at Camp Karlin Stolin in Highland
on Monday evening does not appear to have been suspicious. Fire Chief
Peter Miller said the cause is undetermined, but believed to be electrical
in origin. The investigation remains open.
Firefighters from several area departments fought the blaze at the camp located at 775 North Chodikee Lake Road, which was called in shortly after 5 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later they found the building well involved in flames with several brush fires from embers burning in the area and near other buildings.
All fires, including the building, were quickly contained and knocked down. Overhaul of the remnants of the building was undertaken with the blaze declared out at 7:55 p.m.
Assisting in the firefighting operations were Milton, New Paltz, Esopus and Clintondale fire departments.
