GOSHEN – The year is not quite half over, but on Thursday, Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus sent a budget forecast for 2017 that he termed promising to the county legislature.
“The fiscal future of our county appears bright and I look forward to working with the legislature to continue to move Orange County in a positive financial direction,” he said.
Neuhaus said the county’s fund balance will increase to some $40 million, up from $21 million when he took office 2 ½ years ago. To balance the fiscal plan, the county budget department estimated the county will have to shrink it by $7.6 million or tap the unrestricted fund balance to close the gap. But he said that would compare to a $23 million gap last year and $60 million in 2014.
The CEO of the county’s financial consultant, Munistat Municipal Advisory Service, Noah Nadelson, said it is “incredible who Orange County has been able to accomplish fiscally in such a short time under the Neuhaus administration.” He said the county executive and legislature “have created a culture in which everyone is motivated to succeed.”
Legislature Chairman Stephen Brescia said working with Neuhaus, they have strengthened the county’s finances.
“We will continue to work together to ensure that we progress on this same course,” Brescia said.
