CRAGSMOOR – Fire officials are hoped that Tuesday’s rain
may have slowed down the raging forest fire atop Sam’s Point Preserve.

The last estimate of fire damage on the mountain was 2,000 acres.

Ulster County Executive Michael Hein stopped by7 the fire scene on Tuesday
to provide moral support for all of those involved in the firefighting
operations. He had nothing but praise for the men and women who are involved
in the operation.

While the rain helped limit the further spread of the flames, Hein said
it would be a few more days before it was out.

Seven Dutchess County fire departments were deployed to assist with the
wildfire. Some 30 firefighters responded with their equipment including
brush trucks, utility terrain vehicles and support vehicles. Seventeen
Ulster County fire departments are involved in the operations along with
state personnel and equipment.

Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum said there have been unauthorized
messages being distributed claiming there is a fire evacuation. There
are no evacuations at this time, he said.

Those Dutchess departments responding include Beekman, East Fishkill,
Pleasant Valley, Milan, Millbrook, Tivoli and Union Vale.
