BEACON – The Beacon City Council has declared itself lead agency in the environmental review of a plan to develop a solar farm on the former city landfill site.
The city chose DQ company to install the panels, which will commence once the state Department of Environmental Conservation approves since it will be built on a capped landfill.
Mayor Randy Casale said the work will cost the city nothing plus it will save on electricity costs over the life of the contract.
“We will make money from the energy that we save,” the mayor said. “They operate it and maintain it and we bill them what we should save in our energy and that’s what we should save.”
Casale said the system could be up and running on the 11-acre parcel before the end of the year.
