NEWBURGH – In the wake of a failed lawsuit against the Newburgh
Civil Service Commission that sought to block last weekend’s open
competitive police chief exam, one councilwoman would like to censure
the city manager.

Manager Michael Ciaravino and Provisional Chief Daniel Cameron jointly
filed a lawsuit in State Supreme Court seeking to block the test, but
the court rejected the argument and the test was administered,

Members of the city council, in particular Councilwoman Cindy Holmes,
was annoyed that as legislative body for Newburgh, they were not consulted
or asked for permission to file it ahead of time.

As a result, Holmes, Tuesday, said the council should censure Ciaravino
as a result. Among her concerns is that the city will have to incur the
cost of the city’s civil service lawyer and the attorney for the
manager and provisional chief.

Holmes said the city council should censure Ciaravino for his failure
to seek their approval to sue the civil service commission and incur the
legal fees for the two attorneys.
