KINGSTON – With Ulster County facing a two-year-old mandate by the state to move its family courts to larger facilities, County Legislator David Donaldson continues to lobby his fellow lawmakers to find a suitable location in the City of Kingston in the same Uptown area in which the current courts are situated.
Some in county government have proposed moving to the Business Resource
Center in the Town of Ulster, but Donaldson said Kingston is the county
seat and the other courts and related facilities are located in the city.
“You are talking about a government service,” Donaldson said.  “There are a lot of people who run through that. They claim the turnstiles run as much as 300 people a day, so there is a lot that moves through there and if you are talking about services, that is where the attorneys are and you are able to walk to your attorney and walk to family court.”
Donaldson urged the Joint Public Works and Ways and Means Committee to immediately gather information regarding all available Uptown building opportunities.
The State Office of Court Administration in December threatened to withhold all state dollars if the inadequate and insecure current facility is not addressed in the immediate future.
Democrat Donaldson, a former chairman, commended current Legislature Chairman Kenneth Ronk, a Republican, on making the location of the family court a priority.
