TOWN OF WALLKILL – The general climate in society has seen an increase in violence against law enforcement and there is no place where that is more evident than in state correctional facilities. That assessment comes from Michael Mazzella, the Mid-Hudson regional director of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association.
Violence against officers in prisons is up despite the addition of 100 new members last year, he said.
“That’s why we haven’t really seen a decrease in the violence. Last year was record breaking as far as the assaults against staff and just because you add more officers in a budget doesn’t necessarily mean that those officers are being utilized or placed in an area where they could possibly prevent violence,” Mazzella said.
The governor plans on increasing the number of corrections officers statewide by some 100 over the course of four years.
