MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office arrested two parolees in connection with an extortion plot against a Monticello resident.
On New Year’s Eve, deputies investigated a report of an attempted extortion against a county employee. Deputies recorded the telephone conversation attempting to extort the victim and waited for the defendant, Peter Dilauro, 51, of Monticello, to show up to receive cash from the victim.
Dilauro was on parole from a burglary he committed at a seasonal residence in the Town of Liberty in April 2012. He was sentenced to two to seven years in state prison, but was paroled in March 2015.  He has an active parole warrant for failing to abide by his conditions of release.
Dilauro was charged with felony grand larceny in addition to the parole violation and sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.
During the investigation deputies learned that Dilauro’s estranged wife, Toni Dilauro, 30, of Livingston Manor, allegedly had a role in the extortion plan. She was also the subject of a parole warrant stemming from a separate burglary that occurred in the Village of Liberty in December 2013.  She had been sentenced to three to six years in state prison, but was released this past October.
Toni Dilauro was sent to the Sullivan County Jail without bail on the parole warrant. Her charges against the extortion plot are pending.
Sheriff’s deputies did not identify the victim or nature of the extortion scheme as the investigation is continuing.
