NEWBURGH – The open-competitive
exam for Newburgh police chief will be held on March 5 with the last filing
date January 29.
While current Chief Daniel Cameron has been named permanent, he must take the exam and be among the top three scorers. But, Cameron is objecting to conditions of the exam, maintaining as a 19-year veteran of the city force, a lieutenant, and an acting chief for a year, he should take a promotional exam instead.
Some Cameron supporters believe the open-competitive civil service exam was crafted to block him from being named permanent chief.
The city Civil Service Commission has announced the requirements for
persons who want to take the open-competitive exam – a bachelor’s
degree and four years of full-time police officer experience or an associate’s
degree in justice and four years of full-time police work.
State law also requires candidates appointed as police chief must have served at one time as a police officer and a second-line supervisor as two ranks above police officer.
Living in the City of Newburgh or moving in within 90 days of permanent appointment is also required.
Cameron, who lives outside the city, was grandfathered in when City Manager Michael Ciaravino appointed him. He has no plans to move to the city.
