BEACON – After the first of the year, Beacon Mayor Randy Casale plans on creating a committee to explore potential sites to build a new city firehouse. It would replace the three currently in operation.
Casale said the project is in line with the state’s push for localities to consolidate services to cut costs.
To consolidate you are supposed to save money and at least have the same services,” the mayor said.  “I can do that by consolidating three firehouses into one and save money in the long-term, but up front I have to spend it.”
A new firehouse is estimated to cost $9 million, but the city would place the three existing ones up for sale in hopes of attracting private buyers to spur new economic development and put the properties back on tax rolls.
