POUGHKEEPSIE – An 83-year-old retiree in Poughkeepsie doesn’t sit around wasting time.
When Frank Van Zanten isn’t snowboarding in Vermont, he can often been seen donating blood at the East Fishkill donor center of New York Blood Center.
In fact, on Tuesday, December 29, Van Zanten will be Making his 300th donation of blood, something he started in May 1953 at Fort Lewis, Washington where he started his two years of Army service. It wasn’t until nine years later than he donated his second pint of blood, but after that, “I fell into a pretty regular schedule which still keeps me going now at age 83,” he said. “I just seem to have this thing for phlebotomists.”
The holidays are typically the most difficult times of the year to sustain an adequate blood and platelet supply, the New York Blood Center noted. The agency is asking donors to roll up their sleeves in support of the many patients that rely on the donations.
